I guess it is now well into January 2018.
There seems to be many traditions with starting a new year. Some each pork & sauerkraut to “ensure” a prosperous new year, others make resolutions.
In 1722 and 1723, Jonathan Edwards wrote some 70 resolutions. He purposed to read over all of them at least once a week. There certainly isn’t room in this “receipt paragraph” to list all 70 resolutions, but, I will list some of them along with his introductory statement. Perhaps one of your resolutions for this new year could be to read his resolutions?
“Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God’s help, I do humbly entreat Him by His grace to enable me to keep these resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to His will, for Christ’s sake.”
6. “Resolved, to live with all my might, while I do live.” 69. “Resolved, always to do that, which I shall wish I had done when I see others do it.” 5. “Resolved, never to lose one moment of time; but improve it the most profitable way I possibly can.” 7. “ Resolved, never to do anything, which I should be afraid to do, if it were the last hour of my life.” 25. “Resolved, to examine carefully, and constantly, what that one thing in me is, which causes me in the least to doubt of the love of God; and to direct all my forces against it.”
I did eat some pork and sauerkraut on New Year’s Day, but, I am not counting on that meal to give me a prosperous new year. Our only hope is in almighty God.
